Dr Marc Bush, Director of Policy and Evidence – YoungMinds:
“We continue to support a public inquiry into all unexplained deaths in psychiatric care, including Matthew’s case, to improve transparency and ensure that failings in care are identified and addressed, and that individual Trusts and the wider system are able to learn from mistakes to save lives in the future.
More widely, it is crucial that the rights of young people are always upheld when they are detained under the Mental Health Act, or held in places of safety. This is why we will continue to campaign for stronger, enforceable rights for children and young people in inpatient care, and for urgent reform of the Mental Health Act.”
